Why Your White Gold Ring Is Turning Yellow
You've noticed it on the underside of the band first, or where the ring meets your finger: a warm, faintly yellow cast where the metal used to be bright white. Maybe a slight grey dullness across the top. The ring is three years old and it looks like it's changing.
Here is the whole answer: your ring isn't turning yellow. It was always yellow. What's wearing away is a thin white plating that was applied over it — and putting it back is routine work.
Nothing has gone wrong. You weren't sold something misrepresented. Almost every white gold ring in the world behaves exactly this way, and most people are never told.

White gold isn't a white metal
Gold, in its pure state, is yellow. That's not a treatment or a finish — it's what the element looks like, and nothing changes it.
So "white gold" is not gold that happens to be white. It's gold alloyed with white metals — commonly palladium, nickel, silver or zinc — mixed in to lighten the colour. That mixture does genuinely pull the metal away from yellow, but it doesn't get all the way to white. Left on its own, a white gold alloy is a soft, slightly warm grey — a bit like unpolished steel with a faint champagne cast.
Which is a perfectly attractive metal. It just isn't what people picture when they picture white gold.
What's actually on the outside: rhodium
To get the bright, cool, mirror-white finish that white gold is known for, jewellery manufacturers apply a plating of rhodium — a rare metal in the platinum family, extremely white, extremely hard, and highly reflective.
It's applied in an electroplated layer measured in microns: genuinely thin, and intended to be. That layer is what you have been looking at since the day you got the ring. The gold alloy underneath has been the same colour the entire time.
And like any surface finish on something worn daily against skin, soap, keys, countertops and steering wheels, it wears through. When it does, the alloy beneath starts to show — and against the remaining bright plating it reads as yellow, even though on its own you'd call it warm grey. The contrast is what makes it obvious.
Why the bottom of the band goes first
The wear pattern is consistent enough to be diagnostic. Plating almost always thins first on:
- The underside of the shank — the part pressed between your fingers all day, and the single most common place people first notice it.
- The high points of the setting — prong tips, the edges of a bezel, anywhere raised enough to catch on things.
- Anywhere the ring rubs another ring — an engagement ring and wedding band worn together wear each other, particularly if one is a harder metal.
If your ring is warm underneath and still bright on top, nothing unusual is happening. That's the expected pattern, and it's the clearest sign that what you're seeing is plating wear rather than anything wrong with the ring itself.
How long the plating lasts
There's no honest fixed answer, and we'd be careful of anyone who gives you one. It depends on how often the ring is worn, what you do with your hands, how much the ring rubs against another ring, and — genuinely — your own skin chemistry, which varies from person to person more than most people expect.
What reliably shortens it:
- Chlorine. Pools and hot tubs are hard on plated finishes and, over time, on the alloy itself. Take rings off.
- Household cleaners and bleach. Same reason. Gloves, or take the ring off.
- Hand sanitiser and frequent hand-washing with harsh soap. Cumulative rather than dramatic, but real.
- Abrasive polishing. Polishing cloths and pastes are designed to remove a microscopic layer of metal. On a plated ring, that layer is the plating — so aggressive home polishing removes exactly the thing you're trying to preserve.
- Gym work and manual tasks. Anything that grinds the shank against a bar, a handle or a tool.

Getting the white back
The fix is re-plating: the ring is thoroughly cleaned, any polishing or repair work is done first, and a fresh layer of rhodium is applied. The ring comes back the colour it was when you got it.
A few things worth knowing before it goes in:
- Polishing happens first, and it removes metal. That's fine occasionally and not something to do frequently — on an older ring, and on any piece with hand engraving, milgrain or crisp detail, the instruction should be a light touch. Detail doesn't grow back.
- Some stones need care or removal. The plating process is chemical and electrical, and porous or treated stones — pearls, opals, emeralds, turquoise — don't belong in it. This is a normal part of assessing the job, not a complication.
- It's a natural moment for everything else. The ring is off your finger, clean, and in a jeweller's hands. It's the sensible time to have prongs checked and any sizing done at once rather than making a second trip. If your skin reacts to the ring
Some white gold alloys contain nickel, which is one of the more common metal sensitivities. What often happens is that a ring is worn comfortably for a couple of years and then starts to cause irritation — which puzzles people until they understand the plating. The rhodium layer was acting as a barrier; as it wears through, skin meets the alloy for the first time.
If that's your situation, the practical options are re-plating (which restores the barrier, but is a recurring solution), or moving to a nickel-free alloy or a different metal altogether. Should you just switch to platinum?
It's the reasonable next question, and it deserves a straight answer rather than an upsell.
Platinum is naturally white all the way through, so it never needs plating and never changes colour. What it does instead is develop a patina — a soft, slightly matte surface from thousands of tiny scratches. Some people love it and consider it the whole point; others have it polished back to bright, which is its own periodic maintenance. Platinum is also denser, so the same ring is noticeably heavier.
White gold is lighter, and re-plating is straightforward — but it is a finish that needs occasional renewal, and that's the honest trade.
Neither is better. They're different maintenance temperaments, and the right answer depends on whether you'd rather have a finish that's periodically restored or a surface that slowly softens. It's not a defect and it's not a reason to avoid the metal — it's just maintenance, and nobody should learn about it three years later from the underside of their own ring.
